An effective way to measure behavior

Help children thrive in their school and home environments with effective behavior assessment. The Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC) holds an exceptional track record for providing a complete picture of a child's behavior. School and clinical psychologists have depended on BASC for more than 20 years. Now, renowned authors Drs. Cecil Reynolds and Randy Kamphaus present their latest edition of this excellent measure—BASC-3.

BASC-3 provides the most comprehensive set of rating scales. These scales measure areas important for both IDEA and DSM-5 classifications. Best of all, you receive the most extensive view of adaptive and maladaptive behavior.

Multiple perspectives is the key to measuring behavior

BASC-3 applies a triangulation method for gathering information. By analyzing the child's behavior from three perspectives—Self, Teacher, and Parent—you get a more complete and balanced picture. Combined, these BASC-3 tools provide one of the most comprehensive systems currently available!

Teacher Rating Scales

Use the Teacher Rating Scales (TRS) to measure adaptive and problem behaviors in the preschool or school setting. Teachers or other qualified observers can complete forms at three age levels—preschool (ages 2 to 5), child (ages 6 to 11), and adolescent (ages 12 to 21)—in about 10-20 minutes. The forms describe specific behaviors that are rated on a four-point scale of frequency, ranging from "Never" to "Almost Always." The TRS contains 105-165 items. Validity and response set indexes used to help judge the quality of completed forms are also available.

Parent Rating Scales

Use the Parent Rating Scales (PRS) to measure both adaptive and problem behaviors in the community and home setting. Parents or caregivers can complete forms at three age levels—preschool (ages 2 to 5), child (ages 6 to 11), and adolescent (ages 12 to 21)—in about 10-20 minutes. The PRS contains 139-175 items and uses a four-choice response format. Validity and response set indexes used to help judge the quality of completed forms are also available.

Self-Report of Personality

The Self-Report of Personality (SRP) provides insight into a child's or adult's thoughts and feelings. Each form—child (ages 8 to 11), adolescent (ages 12 to 21), college (ages 18 to 25)—includes validity scales for helping judge the quality of completed forms. The SRP takes about 30 minutes to complete.

A Spanish version is available for the child and adolescent forms only.

BASC-3 Student Observation System (SOS)

Enables clinicians and other qualified observers to code and record direct observations of a child’s behavior in a classroom setting. The observer can objectively rate a wide range of behaviors, using momentary time sampling during three-second intervals spaced 30 seconds apart over a 15-minute period. The SOS assesses both adaptive and maladaptive behaviors, from positive peer interaction to repetitive motor movements. This tool can be employed for the direct observation portion of a Functional Behavior Assessment and can be used singly or with other BASC-3 components. The SOS form can be completed using Q-global or a paper form.

Structured Developmental History (SDH)

Offers a comprehensive history and background survey that supplies a thorough review of social, psychological, developmental, educational, and medical information on the child.

  • BASC-3 and ADHD

    Presenter: Cecil Reynolds, Ph.D.

This training will focus on development and application of a comprehensive approach to careful diagnosis and specific interventions for ADHD under the BASC-3 models of assessment and intervention.  The BASC-3 models focus  not just on eligibility, but developing a comprehensive diagnosis and understanding of the student. Differential diagnosis that leads to a process of identification of evidence-based interventions tailored to student needs will be emphasized.  Current DSM 5 criteria are emphasized in the diagnostic process but matching to interventions is also considered important.   Actuarial approaches will be emphasized but the need to integrate these approaches to individual children will also be stressed and approaches to involving parents in the process will be discussed.  A brief discussion of the history of ADHD is given and the controversies surrounding its diagnosis addressed.  Comprehensive behaviorally based differential diagnosis is then emphasized, leading to both psychosocial and educational interventions. The need and means of monitoring treatment effectiveness are also addressed.

Pre-recorded Webinars

  • BASC-3 FLEX Monitor

    Presenter: Cecil Reynolds, PhD

The BASC-3 Flex Monitor is a revolutionary new tool that will allow psychologists to develop and apply unique self-report and behavior rating scales with known psychometric qualities that are then normed against the BASC-3 nationally standardization sample. Psychologists may design such forms for unique cases for applications in following the progress of any given case (N=1) or may develop a specialized self-report or behavior rating scale for parents and/or teachers that is applicable to children and youth in specific programs within a school or clinic setting, designed specifically to match the treatment goals of the program. The current webinar will focus on the development and clinical applications of this unique technology as a means to improve treatment outcome as well as improve programs for intervention with individuals with emotional and behavioral disorders. Specific instruction regarding the development of individualized forms by the clinician will be provided along with evaluating reliable change and the sharing of forms across clinicians within a common account system.
