Product Details

In addition to Features & Benefits, this page covers:

Subtests | Scores & Interpretation | Fine & Gross Motor Kits

Features and Benefits

  • Most widely used motor proficiency test
  • Short Form for use as a screening tool for overall motor proficiency
  • Separate Fine Motor and Gross Motor kits available
  • High-quality manipulatives, including a wide, durable balance beam
  • Large, clear pictures in the administration easel that help children better understand the activities you are asking them to perform
  • Engaging, game-like tasks
  • Norms based on U.S. Census data

Provides a comprehensive picture of motor development

Occupational Therapists, special education professionals, physical therapists, developmental adaptive physical education teachers, and other professionals use the BOT-2 to help:

  • Assess the motor proficiency of all children, ranging from those who are typically developing to those with mild to moderate motor control problems
  • Support diagnosis of motor impairments
  • Screen individuals who may have certain deficits in motor ability and who might benefit from further evaluation or interventions
  • Make educational placement decisions
  • Develop and evaluate motor training programs

Challenging, game-like tasks

Children enjoy the variety and appeal of the test items. BOT-2 items provide a full range of interesting tasks that measure gross and fine motor skills—maintaining balance while standing on one leg, bouncing a ball, and cutting out a circle are just a few examples.

New administration easel makes testing more efficient

BOT-2 features a sturdy administration easel with an easy-to-use layout that gives examiners access to all the information they need on a single page. The easel also provides suggestions to guide examiners in explaining the tasks. For the examinee, large, clear pictures of the tasks being completed help provide a better understanding of the test items, especially for children who have language, cognition, or attention problems.

Eight subtests assess:

  • Fine Motor Precision—7 items (e.g., cutting out a circle, connecting dots)
  • Fine Motor Integration—8 items (e.g., copying a star, copying a square)
  • Manual Dexterity—5 items (e.g., transferring pennies, sorting cards, stringing blocks)
  • Bilateral Coordination—7 items (e.g., tapping foot and finger, jumping jacks)
  • Balance—9 items (e.g., walking forward on a line, standing on one leg on a balance beam)
  • Running Speed and Agility—5 items (e.g., shuttle run, one-legged side hop)
  • Upper-Limb Coordination—7 items (e.g., throwing a ball at a target, catching a tossed ball)
  • Strength—5 items (e.g., standing long jump, sit-ups)

Composite Scores

BOT–2 covers a broad array of fine and gross motor skills, providing six composite scores and one comprehensive measure of overall motor proficiency. These composites are:

  • Fine Manual Control
  • Manual Coordination
  • Body Coordination
  • Strength and Agility
  • Total Motor Composite
  • Gross Motor Composite (Available with Q-global, and Fine and Gross Motor Supplemental Manual)
  • Fine Motor Composite (Available with Q-global, and Fine and Gross Motor Supplemental Manual )

Interpretation

  • Normative interpretation of subtest and composite scores
  • Profile analysis to evaluate an individual's strengths and weaknesses
  • Clinical validity studies on high-functioning autism/Asperger's Disorder, developmental coordination disorder, and mild-to moderate mental retardation

BOT-2 Fine and Gross Motor Kits

Separate Fine Motor and Gross Motor Kits are available. Professionals who want to assess only an examinee's fine motor skills can do so using the BOT-2 Fine Motor Form. Similarly, those who want to assess only an examinee's gross motor skills can now do so using the BOT-2 Gross Motor Form.

The BOT-2 Fine Motor Form consists of the following four subtests:

  • Fine Motor Precision
  • Fine Motor Integration
  • Manual Dexterity
  • Upper-Limb Coordination

In addition to the four subtest scores, the Fine Motor Form provides scores on two motor-area composites (Fine Manual Control and Manual Coordination) and a new Fine Motor Composite.

The BOT-2 Gross Motor Form consists of the following four subtests:

  • Bilateral Coordination
  • Balance
  • Running Speed and Agility
  • Strength

The Gross Motor Form provides scores on the four subtests, two motor-area composites (Body Coordination and Strength and Agility), and a new Gross Motor Composite.

The Supplemental Manual included in the Fine and Gross Motor kits provides instructions for using the BOT-2 Fine Motor Form and Gross Motor Form, as well as technical information on the new Fine Motor Composite and Gross Motor Composite scores.

Scoring

BOT-2 on Q-global® web-based scoring and reporting allows you to quickly and easily score and report results. It includes these features:

  • Entry of either the Item Raw Scores or subtest Total Point Scores
  • Generation of derived scores and score profiles
  • Identification of examinees' motor skill strengths and weaknesses

Two options for scoring and reporting the BOT-2 are now available on Q-global.

The first option is to pay per-report. Customers who administer the BOT-2 only a few times each year, or those who want the flexibility to pay only as the assessment is used, may prefer this option.

The second option is to select an "unlimited use" subscription, where one user of the BOT-2 gets unlimited scoring and reporting for one, three, or five years depending on the selected term of the subscription. This may be a better option for customers who administer the BOT-2 several times each year—and don't want to worry about keeping track of their report expenses.

FAQs

Questions

Frequently asked questions follow. Click on a question to see the response.

  • What is the recommended minimum interval for re-assessment using the BOT-2 family of assessments?

The minimum recommended interval for reassessment with the BOT-2 is 3 months or more.

The test re-test data gathered during development of the BOT-2 show minimal mean differences with an average retest interval of 19-20 days, and average test score differences in the test-retest study are well below the SEms. The differences beyond 2-3 months are likely to represent developmental or skill gains, especially at lower age levels. It is very unlikely that practice effects would influence the BOT-2 scores, since it is a performance based test without a guessing component, and the items are not used for practice during the interval between tests.

  • Why do you no longer sell software based scoring and reporting using Assist?

In response to customer feedback the BOT-2 is now available on Q-global® - Pearson’s web-based administration, scoring, and reporting system. In line with the Assist software, unlimited scoring subscriptions are available for 1, 3, or 5 years; this is in addition to a per-report price. Please see the pricing section for full details.
