Assess and Improve Social Skills with the SSIS™ SEL

A child’s social skills don’t just impact their ability to make friends in school, but cross over into every aspect of their daily lives. Effective screening, intervention measures, and progress monitoring can greatly improve social behaviors, motivation, and academic success. Used together, these tools offer a coordinated system for improving social skills in a classroom or group setting.

SSIS™ Social–Emotional Learning Edition (SEL)

Fully aligned with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) framework, the SSIS SEL Edition provides evidence-based tools to assess and teach core social–emotional skills.

Components of the SSIS SEL

SSIS SEL Edition Screening/Progress Monitoring Scales

This brief (30 to 45 minutes), class-based, criterion referenced rating scale can be used to assess students’ strengths and improvement areas across five SEL and three academic competencies. Completed by teachers, this assessment can be used to screen an entire class or school of students, then used to monitor the effects of CASEL-aligned interventions.

Classwide Intervention Program

Used by teachers or behavioral specialists, this program provides a comprehensive and engaging six-step (Tell, Show, Do, Practice, Monitor Progress, and Generalize) approach for teaching social–emotional skills. It consists of scripted weekly lesson plans for each of the 10 core social–emotional skills, along with accompanying Digital Lessons and video vignettes that can be used to engage a class when teaching the skills. In addition, it provides lesson plans for 13 advanced SEL skills.

Rating Scales - Teacher, Parent, and Student Forms

The SSIS SEL Rating Scales enables targeted assessment of individuals and small groups to help evaluate social skills, problem behaviors, and academic competence. Teacher, parent and student forms help provide a comprehensive picture across school, home, and community settings.

The multi-rater SSIS Rating Scales helps measure:

  • Social skills—communication, cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy, engagement, and self-control

  • Academic Competence—reading achievement, math achievement, motivation to learn

SSIS SEL Edition Classwide Intervention Program (CIP)

SSIS SEL Classwide Intervention Program is a CASEL SELect program!
The SSIS SEL Edition CIP can be used by teachers and mental health professionals to develop and improve social-emotional skills for children ages 4 to 14. It is, in effect, a developmental curriculum focusing on 23 social-emotional skills that are important to educators, parents, and students with each CIP skill primarily representing one of the five CASEL core competences. Collectively, across all 23 units there are three self-awareness skills, six self-management skills, three social awareness skills, six relationship skills, and five responsible decision making skills. Skills from Units 1 through 10 are considered core skills because they are foundational and in many ways prerequisites to the developmentally more advanced skills in Units 11 through 23.
